Launch of Meningitis UK’s Marathon walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End
Meningitis UK's Chief Executive and some of the charity's supporters will be at the Visitor Centre Car Park to start the Marathon Walk
On Wednesday 20th September 2006 Meningitis UK's Chief Executive Steve Dayman will be setting off on his marathon fundraising walk from John O'Groats to Land's End in a bid to raise over £100,000 for the cause. Steve will be joined by hundreds of supporters at various stages along the route, many of whom have experienced the devastation that meningitis can cause. Steve Fear, who lost his 16 year old niece to meningitis, will embark on this gruelling journey with Steve to complete a staggering 906 miles in just 40 days.
To date, Steve Dayman,who lost his 14-month-old son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982, has walked over 8,000 miles, which is the equivalent of walking almost a third of the way round the world and this will be his 20th marathon walk. The walkers will be collecting in the towns and villages as they pass through and handing out wallet-sized symptoms cards to alert the general public about the importance of recognising the symptoms of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia and the need to act fast.
Steve Dayman said ‘We are very grateful to the hundreds of supporters who join us and for the generosity of the general public we meet along the route, without whom we would not be able to raise funds for Meningitis UK's vital work . Meningitis UK has a single focus - to find a vaccine to eradicate meningitis. Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of meningitis there is still no vaccine to protect against the most common form - meningococcal group B. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to join us on the walk.'
