Meningitis UK’s response to the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of 17 year-old Shomi Miah
Meningitis UK has been following the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of 17-year-old Shomi Miah from Aberdeen who died tragically from meningitis on 26th October 2004.
This tragedy emphasises the importance of early recognition, diagnosis and prompt treatment, and how imperative it is to find a vaccine to protect against all forms of the disease to prevent other families suffering the devastation and heartache Shomi's family are going through.
Since Shomi's tragic death, her family have found it helpful to support Meningitis UK and have raised thousands of pounds in her memory to help fund lifesaving research into finding a vaccine to eradicate all types of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia. Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of meningitis, there is still no vaccine to protect against all strains of the disease, including the most common - Meningitis B.
