Small Wonders Nursery School win national meningitis Maskathon competition

Children and Staff from Small Wonders Nursery School will be presented with £150 worth of toys by representatives from Meningitis UK

Creative tots from Small Wonders Nursery School are looking forward to playing with £150 worth of Hasbro toys after winning a national competition launched as part of Meningitis UK's first Mini Maskathon campaign.

National charity Meningitis UK invited nurseries across the UK to make masks and hold a sponsored event to raise money for life-saving vaccine development research. The competition was to find the most imaginative group based on the creativity of their masks and way of raising money.

Children from Small Wonders Nursery beat over 200 nurseries to win the event by holding a letter-land themed dance and mask parade. Forty children aged between one and four took part and raised a fantastic £289.

Carol Ryan, Deputy Manager at the nursery was delighted to find out they had won the event. She said: "We took part because meningitis is such a worthwhile cause which can affect anyone. Taking part in the Mini Maskathon has been a good learning experience for the children and the staff."

Sadly bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia continue to kill more children under five than any other infectious disease and there is still no vaccine to protect against the most common forms.

Sian Evans, Appeals Officer for Meningitis UK explains why Mini Maskathon was such an important event: "Raising awareness about these diseases and the need to seek medical help quickly can save lives. This was a chance for children to have fun and be creative and for parents, carers and staff to learn more about the symptoms whilst helping to raise money to find a vaccine."

The charity would like to hear from families who have been affected by meningitis or anyone who may wish to help the charity by fundraising or distributing educational literature locally. To receive an information pack or make a donation please phone 0117 373 73 73 or visit www.meningitisuk.org
