Step Out For Meningitis This Spring
On Sunday 30th April 2006 Meningitis UK's Chief Executive Steve Dayman, will be setting off on a marathon fundraising walk from Blackpool to Bridlington. The walk will cover 140 miles in 7 days starting from the Palm Beach Hotel, South Shore, Blackpool. Steve is looking for supporters who may wish to take part in any stage of the walk. To date, Steve has completed 18 marathon walks and has walked a staggering 8,000 miles, which is the equivalent of walking almost a third of the way round the world.
"We are aiming to raise £20,000 from this 7-day event and are appealing to any of your readers to come along and join the walk anywhere, anytime, for any distance. They can help us reach our target by either collecting in the towns and villages as we pass through or by being sponsored to take part in a stage of the walk. Just one or two miles will make a real difference" said Steve Dayman, Chief Executive of Meningitis UK.
Steve continued "Meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia are devastating diseases that can often strike with little or no warning and can sadly end in death or permanent disability. There were over 2,300 cases of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia provisionally recorded in the UK in 2005, over 300 of which were fatal."
The money raised for Meningitis UK through this walk will go towards finding a vaccine to eradicate meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia. Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of meningitis, there is still no vaccine to protect against other deadly strains, including the most common, Meningitis B. Meningitis UK rely entirely on charitable donations so raising funds is crucial in enabling the charity to continue working towards preventing these diseases and the subsequent devastation they cause.
