Call for Cardiff Half Marathon Runners
Editors Letter asking anyone with an independent place in the Cardiff Half Marathon if they want to Run for Meningitis UK and support the charities Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign
Dear Editor,
We would like to ask any of your readers who are bravely taking part in this year's the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday 14th October and have an independent place, if they would like to run for Meningitis UK.
Meningitis UK has a single focus - to find a vaccine to eradicate meningitis. Tragically, meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia continue to affect thousands of people in the UK every year and kill more children under five than any other infectious disease.
This year, we launched our ‘Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign' which signals the start of a major phase in the search for a vaccine for meningococcal group B - the most common form of meningitis in the UK, which accounts for almost 90% of all cases and for which there is currently no vaccine.
Scientists believe that with enough support, this can be achieved within the next 7-10 years - possibly even sooner. The aim of the campaign is to raise £7 million over the next seven years to fund the research needed to reach this goal.
If you would like to run for Meningitis UK and help us achieve our vision, please contact Emily on 0117 373 7373 for a sponsorship pack. Everyone participating on behalf of the charity will receive a free ‘Search 4 a Vaccine' running vest, plus a handy information pack including hints and tips on how to prepare. We look forward to hearing from you!
Yours faithfully,
Emily Knight
