Editors Letter to launch REG's Mini Maskathon 2007

Dear Editor,

Once again this summer, thousands of children under the age of 5 will be taking part in REG's Mini Maskathon - Meningitis UK's special annual event for nurseries and playgroups - and we would like to invite groups across the UK to join in the fun.

Last year the event raised £16,323 and this year we hope to raise even more - £30,000. This money will fund vital research projects to find a vaccine to prevent the most common form of Meningitis, for which there is currently no vaccine.

Meningitis kills more children under 5 than any other infectious disease in the UK and Meningitis UK is the only charity solely dedicated to finding a vaccine to prevent it, so the more support we receive the sooner we can find a vaccine.

The idea is simple. Children create their own masks to a theme of their choice and then display them in a sponsored event. Some play-leaders choose a toddle or run in the local park; others have created an assault course and one even themed the day on an Ugly Bug Ball and had a bug picnic of frog spawn jelly and bug-shaped cakes!

All nurseries and playgroups taking part will receive a free fundraising resource pack including a sing-a-long CD, mask templates, posters, certificates, sticky badges and much more to make sure they have everything they need.

Taking part in Mini Maskathon is the perfect way for the children to practice their artistic skills and get active, whilst helping the charity at the same time. Thanks to the support of the Early Learning Centre, we're also giving all groups who raise over £200 a free toy!

Mini Maskathon will officially start on Monday 11th June and will run until the beginning of the summer holidays on Thursday 26th July 2006.

To take part or find out more, please phone Laura at Meningitis UK on 0117 373 73 73 or email minimaskathon@meningitisuk.org

Yours faithfully
