Louise Greer, one of Ulster’s bravest young girls, launches Meningitis UK’s forthcoming 2007 Spring Walk
Battling 10-year-old Louise Greer, one of Ulster's bravest young girls, today launched Meningitis UK's forthcoming 2007 Spring Walk in Coleraine. Louise who lost both her legs and an arm to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia when she was just two, is already an established fundraiser for the charity.
The eight day walk, which begins at the Guildhall, Londonderry on Saturday 26th May 2007, will pass through Limavady, Coleriane, Belfast, Newtownards via the Strangford Lough down to Portaferry and on through Downpatrick and Newcastle finishing on Saturday 2nd June in Newry.
Meningitis UK's Chief Executive Steve Dayman, who lost his son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982 will be walking the whole route and said today"14 months ago we undertook a similar walk form Derry to Larne in just 5 days and raised over £25,000. Our supporters here in Northern Ireland are very much looking forward to this event and are determined to beat the previous total."
"If you would like to see some beautiful scenery and make a significant contribution towards finding a vaccine to eradicate this awful disease, please come and join us. You can walk for as little or as long as you want and start and finish anywhere along the route."
Meningitis UK is dedicated to finding a vaccine to eradicate all forms of meningitis. Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of the disease, the charity wishes to emphasise that there is still no vaccine available to protect against all strains, including the most common form in the UK - meningococcal group B, which accounts for almost 90% of all cases.
Everyone who takes part will receive a free commemorative t-shirt, an information pack including handy tips on how to prepare for the event and raise money, plus sponsorship forms and support from the charity's fundraising team.
