Meningitis Marathon Man urges others to Run 4 Meningitis
On Sunday 30th September, Steve Ambrose will be taking part in this year's Great North Run in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne for Meningitis UK. This legendary event is the biggest Half Marathon in the world. Steve chose to run for Meningitis UK because he suffered from meningitis in 2005 and can appreciate first-hand how frightening the disease can be.
Steve has been training hard and is really looking forward to the challenge. Steve said "It was a real shock when I suffered from meningitis as it is a disease that is often only associated with young people. It was really hard for both me and my wife and when she met someone from Meningitis UK handing out information she was relieved to finally understand more about the illness. After the charity's support, I wanted to give something back and taking part in the Great North Run really appealed to me. I have never done anything for charity before, but I am pleased that after making a full recovery I can do something positive."
Meningitis UK's single focus is to find a vaccine to eradicate all forms of meningitis. In April, the charity launched its national ‘Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign' to raise £7 million over the next 7 years to fund lifesaving research to find a vaccine for Meningitis B - the most common form of meningitis in the UK, which accounts for almost 90% of all cases and for which there is currently no vaccine.
The charity still has a number of elusive golden bond places available in the 2007 Great North Run for eager runners who want to take part. All you have to do is guarantee to raise over £250 in sponsorship. The ballot for the 2007 event is now closed so running for charity is the only way to take part.
The places are being offered on a first come, first served basis so to reserve your place, please contact Emily at Meningitis UK now on 0117 373 73 73 or email emilyknight@meningitisUK.org for a sponsorship pack.
The charity would also like to hear from you if you have an independent place and would like to run for the charity. Everyone participating will receive a free ‘Search 4 a Vaccine' running vest, plus a handy information pack including hints and tips on how to prepare.
