Meningitis UK’s response to the news that Peter Andre has been admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis

Meningitis UK were concerned to hear that singer Peter Andre has been admitted to East Surrey Hospital and is suffering from suspected meningitis. We hope a successful outcome will prevail and wish him a speedy recovery and would like to pass on our best wishes to Katie and the family.

Meningitis is a devastating disease which can strike within hours and happens so quickly there is little time to realise something is seriously wrong.

Steve Dayman, Meningitis UK's Chief Executive said "Viral meningitis is more common than bacterial meningitis and much less dangerous. Treatment for viral meningitis is usually rest and pain killers, and people tend to make a full recovery within two-weeks.

"However, sadly, bacterial meningitis can be life threatening and someone suffering from bacterial meningitis needs to be treated with antibiotics immediately. The sooner treatment is given, the more likely the person is to make a full recovery."

Sadly, although successful vaccines exist to protect against some strains, there is still no vaccine available to protect against the most common form - meningococcal group B, which causes almost 90% of all cases in the UK.

Meningitis UK have this month launched their national ‘Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign' which signals the start of a major phase in the search for a vaccine for meningococcal group B. Scientists believe that with enough support, this can be achieved within the next 7-10 years - possibly even sooner. The aim of the campaign is to raise £7 million over the next seven years to fund the research needed to reach this goal.
