New meningitis website will help save lives

In preparation for the number of meningitis cases which traditionally peak in February, this week sees the eagerly awaited launch of an innovative new website to warn against meningitis.

This user-friendly site has been designed to encourage people to become familiar with the symptoms of this devastating disease and to support the charity's search for a vaccine.

Meningitis UK is dedicated to finding a vaccine to eradicate all forms of meningitis. Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of the disease, the charity wishes to emphasise that there is still no vaccine available to protect against all strains, including the most common form in the UK - meningococcal group B, which accounts for almost 90% of all cases.

Meningitis UK's Chief Executive, Steve Dayman said "Meningitis can kill in hours, so learning more about the disease can save valuable time and give people the confidence to seek medical help quickly. By simply visiting www.meningitisUK.org anyone can easily find out the answer to questions they might have about meningitis or request awareness materials using the online form.

The website also incorporates a message board so people can share their experiences and relate to others who have suffered similar trauma. Meningitis UK represents hundreds of families who have suffered the devastation of meningitis. Together we strive towards a better understanding of the disease and to find a vaccine to prevent the heartache and suffering it can cause."
