Where there’s muck there’s money for Meningitis
Bristol and Avon Transport are supporting Bristol-based charity Meningitis UK for the month of September and generously donating £1 for every 4 loads of Muck they move through their trucks and skips. Directors of the company Aidan, Kevin and Claire Berkley have supported the meningitis cause since family friend Steve Dayman, who is the Chief Executive of Meningitis UK, lost his 14-month-old son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982.
Meningitis UK has a single focus - to find a vaccine to eradicate all forms of meningitis. Earlier this year, the charity launched its ‘Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign' which signals the start of a major phase in the search for a vaccine for meningococcal group B - the most common form of meningitis in the UK, which accounts for almost 90% of all cases and for which there is still no vaccine.
Kevin Berkley, one of the Directors of Bristol and Avon Transport said "My family have all known Steve for many years and we have supported the meningitis cause since he lost his little boy Spencer. All our employees have offered to wear t-shirts which will help raise awareness of the disease and we're hoping to shift at least ? loads of Muck in September to raise £? for Meningitis UK."
Steve Dayman, Chief Executive of Meningitis UK said "The aim of our Search 4 Vaccine Campaign is to raise £7million over the next seven years to help develop a vaccine against meningitis B, which is why support from companies such as Bristol and Avon Transport is so important. I am sure that together, with the help of the general public, we will be able to reach our goal to eradicate this disease."
